P Cameron Johnston Injured Against Falcons - Steelers Depot

After three years with punter Pressley Harvin III, the Steelers made the decision to go on with a new punter in 2024, signing former Texans leg Cameron Johnston. Unfortunately, it looks like they will be forced to find another solution to their punting game since Johnston has sustained what head coach Mike Tomlin labeled a “serious injury,” according ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.

Johnston’s kicking leg was injured on a punt in the fourth quarter of the team’s victory over the Falcons when a Falcons defender tumbled into it after Johnston landed after the kick. The knee seemed to pop as the defender made contact, and Johnston fell to the ground in apparent excruciating pain. The trainers examined Johnston and he hobbled off the field, giving some hope, but before the game was over, he was carted off the sideline and into the locker room.

The Steelers needed one more punt before the game ended, so they went to kicker Chris Boswell, who made a 43-yarder. Boswell has experience kicking field goals and punting, having played punt and field goal kicker at Rice University. For the Owls, he attempted 15 punts, averaging 40.3 yards per attempt. But going forward, it doesn’t seem feasible to depend on Boswell to play both positions on special teams, so while Johnston is out, expect Pittsburgh to look for an alternative.

Reintroducing Harvin is one such solution—possibly an unpopular one in Pittsburgh. Harvin signed with the 49ers after being cut by the Steelers, however he was waived prior to the start of the season. Harvin would now be open to returning for a second tenure, should an invitation arise. Harvin averaged 43.83 yards per punt over the previous two seasons, ranking the Steelers 32nd in the league; yet, given today’s setback, Pittsburgh might not have much of an option. Johnston will shortly get an MRI to ascertain the Steelers’ next course of action and his prognosis.
