Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow confirmed that Triston Casas suffered a rupture of the patellar tendon in his left knee and will have surgery after he was taken off the field on a stretcher during Friday’s game against the Minnesota Twins. The Red Sox are now searching for a new first baseman, and Breslow stated that “all options are on the table.” Former New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo is one intriguing option, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Rizzo, 35, is still a free agent and wants to continue playing. In 2021, the Yankees purchased Rizzo from the Chicago Cubs. With the Cubs, Rizzo won three All-Star selections, four Gold Glovers, Silver Sluggers, Platinum Glovers, and World Series. He had an impressive.234/.326/.409 in his three seasons with the Yankees. Despite his poor stats, injuries were a factor. Rizzo has also admitted that his free agency has been impacted by ailments.

“I had a kind of weird year with the concussion two years ago,” Rizzo told Rosenthal. “Then last year, I was hurt twice. My power numbers dropped. I’m surprised, but not like crazy surprised just because I’m a realist in the game and you’re getting older. The fact that teams want you to play for basically league minimum ($760,000), I’m like, you guys are crazy. You’re almost trying to ruin the market for the next guy.” Many fans blame Rizzo’s concussion when they try to determine what went wrong for him in New York. The Red Sox suddenly need a first base, and it won’t take much to replace the production Casas was providing.

Rizzo is an upgrade over current options but how much of an upgrade? - Pinstripe Alley

“He certainly struggled through the first month or so of the season but that didn’t change what we believed his production was capable of being,” Breslow told MassLive. Casas had a.800 OPS in 63 games the previous season, and the organization and fans had high expectations for him going into this season. Rizzo could be an intriguing option if the Red Sox do not want to make a last-minute trade for a first baseman.
