Panthers release Jadeveon Clowney after one season

NFL radio has been filled with rumors regarding veteran outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney’s next team ever since the Carolina Panthers cut him go on Thursday. The desire of Lions supporters for their club to pursue the three-time Pro Bowl player was not unique.

However, not all Lions supporters supported the signing of Clowney at the time. Although everyone agrees that Detroit has to strengthen its pass rush, some supporters are concerned about the deal’s cost and cultural fit. One has to ask whether it makes sense to add Clowney, particularly in light of the possibility that Za’Darius Smith may return to Detroit.

The Lions could have a better alternative than Clowney even if Za’Darius Smith decides not to rejoin Motown. A better choice than Clowney would be Matthew Judon, one of the top pass rushers still available in free agency.

Matthew Judon should be signed by the Lions. Rather than Jadeveon Clowney
Clowney has been a journeyman throughout his career, even though he is still a good defender. Since joining the Texans, Clowney has made several stops and tired himself out. This was the 32-year-old’s sixth club in six seasons with the Panthers. After he chastised the Browns for his involvement, he left Cleveland in a very publicized manner.

It’s unclear if Clowney would be a perfect match given that Dan Campbell and the Lions place a higher priority on culture than any other NFL team.

Even though Clowney had a much better season last year, Matt Judon may be the perfect decision for the Lions. After being traded to the Falcons prior to the 2024 season, the former leader of the Ravens and Patriots had a dismal season. Despite this, he recorded seven tackles for loss, nine quarterback hits, and 5.5 sacks. Additionally, his contract would probably be more team-friendly. Instead, Detroit need to give chasing Judon some serious thought.
