Breaking news: The Yankees land a shortstop within their division for a three-year, $33.6 million contract.

The New York Yankees immediately had a third base problem when third baseman Oswald Cabrera sustained an ankle injury that would keep him out for the rest of the season. Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas are currently the team’s only options for third base. There is a slight void in the Yankees lineup because those two aren’t really good players. In order to acquire shortstop Bo Bichette, New York executes a huge trade with the division foe Toronto Blue Jays.
Similar to his colleague Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bichette is in the last season of a three-year, $33.6 million contract, and there hasn’t been any movement on an extension. A Bichette trade makes great sense because of this, as well as the fact that Toronto is already two games below.500 and doesn’t appear to be much of a playoff danger. The Yankees would demonstrate their seriousness about returning to the World Series for the second straight season by swooping in and making a transaction with a division foe.
Bichette is back on track this season after reaching a career-low.225 the previous season. He has four home runs, fifteen doubles, and twenty-two RBIs in 187 at-bats, with an average of.294. Bichette has a career batting average of.290 over seven seasons, and it looks like he’s back to his previous level of play. With a.302 average, 12 home runs, and 43 RBI, Bichette has had success at Yankee Stadium during his career. New York could attempt to make a trade because of his performance at that stadium.
Considering that shortstop Anthony Volpe won a Gold Glove the previous season, he would probably be asked to play third base. It would be comparable to last season when the Yankees acquired Jazz Chisholm and wanted him to play third base, considering Bichette has not played third base in the major leagues. Toronto’s willingness to let go of Bichette is uncertain, particularly if the Yankees make the call. But if they are, it might solidify New York’s position as the AL’s top pick to play in the World Series.
