Breaking news: Steelers star DK Metcalf attacked by teammate…..

Jaguars release WR Bryan Walters

Now that DK Metcalf is with the Pittsburgh Steelers, a former Seattle Seahawks receiver had some things to say about him.

The impact it had on the perimeter was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ most significant summer move. In addition to securing a long-term contributor at a premium position, trading a second-round selection for Seattle Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf gave the Dallas Cowboys the leverage to acquire George Pickens later in the spring.

The Steelers are in a similar predicament offensively. They only have one above-average receiver and no franchise quarterback. Metcalf is still an improvement, though, as his skill set sustains the attack downfield.

Not everybody is convinced on the move. Some of his erstwhile admirers have seized the chance to sell themselves on the trade now that he is no longer in Seattle.

New Steelers WR D.K. Metcalf now will wear No. 4.

Following the March deal, former Seahawks receiver Bryan Walters attacked the Steelers’ new star on “The Brock & Salk Show.”

Walters remarked, “I’ve been pretty outspoken about my opinions on DK as a wide receiver. I suppose I’ll be a little nice, but a little overrated.” He will succeed in Pittsburgh, in my opinion, but they have completely redesigned the wide receiver room to accommodate Kubiak’s scheme and a number of players who are better route runners and who just enhance one another. I believe it will be a lot of fun to see JSN and Cooper Kupp together.

To be fair to Walters, Metcalf is a little overrated. His 4.33-second 40-yard dash at 6-3, 228 generated a lot of pre-draft hype, and his game is based on splash plays that wind up on SportsCenter. This is a recipe for enormous recognition, but more importantly, it doesn’t stop him from making a huge impact in Pittsburgh. Additionally, Kupp is a better fit in Klint Kubiak’s offense than Metcalf, as a wide zone offense places more emphasis on detail-oriented receivers who can block and win horizontally as much as vertically.

Walters isn’t necessarily off-base in his statements. But it’s added fuel to the fire, and making a solid first impression would go a long way in striking back at the franchise that traded him. Pittsburgh will play Seattle in Week 2, giving Metcalf an opportunity to exact payback.

Pickens, George
