Thanks to a strong performance from Max Muncy, Los Angeles won 18–2, establishing a lead so comfortable that Ohtani took a brief break.
A thrilling 2024 World Series rematch took a little turn for the worst on Saturday. In the second game of the three-game series, the Los Angeles Dodgers humiliatingly trounced the New York Yankees, winning 18–2.
Aaron Judge hit two solo home runs to prevent New York from being shut out while the Yankees used up eight pitchers.
Los Angeles’ offense was too strong for the Yankees to contain. Shohei Ohtani, the designated hitter, seemed to nod off in the sixth inning as the Dodgers accumulated a lead so large.
Saturday’s game was far more one-sided, even if Friday night’s was a de facto home run derby. Without wasting any time, L.A. went through the whole batting order and scored four runs in the first inning.
In the second inning, the Dodgers continued to pile on. Max Muncy gave L.A. a 7-0 lead and ended the night for Yankees starter Will Warren with a three-run home bomb, his 200th home run in his career.
The Yankees’ suffering continued even after Warren was replaced by Brent Headrick. Hyeseong Kim’s two-run homer and Tommy Edman’s RBI double increased the Dodgers’ advantage to 10-0.
In the fourth inning, Judge put New York on the board with a single shot. However, the Dodgers continued to advance in the fifth inning when Kim was hit for another run by Freddie Freeman’s crisp double down the right-field line.
Muncy went yard again two batters later, sending Freeman and Ohtani home with another three-run homer.
L.A. even had a strong defensive night, with Kim in particular playing well in center field and shortstop to prevent the Yankees from scoring.
Ohtani was at ease enough to take a little sleep with L.A.’s sizable lead.
For what it’s worth, Ohtani has previously told reporters that he like to get 10 hours of sleep per night in addition to a two-hour nap. Ohtani and his spouse received their first kid in April, and they now have a small youngster at home. Instead of the Dodgers’ ruthless 13-run advantage that was established just halfway through the game, Yankees supporters may choose to focus on one of those two factors.
The Dodgers were not done even after Ohtani’s cat nap: Andy Pages, an outfielder, blasted a single shot in the eighth to increase L.A.’s advantage to 15-1, leaving the Yankees wishing MLB had a mercy rule.
Judge kept up the good work, blasting another solo homer in the eighth inning to earn some sympathy points while the rest of New York’s lineup struggled. However, L.A. was far from finished. Dalton Rushing, a pinch hitter who was replacing the drowsy Ohtani, smashed another home run and added a three-run bomb of his own to make the score 18-2. The majority of the seats behind home plate cleared away once the victory was assured.
