Breaking news: Steelers set to sign former MVP candidate quarterback as chances of acquiring Aaron Rodgers are dwindling.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ chances of acquiring Aaron Rodgers are dwindling. However, the Steelers are expected to add a quarterback this offseason because there are only three quarterbacks on the 90-man roster, including Skylar Thompson, who the team only signed a futures/reserve deal with this offseason. Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports claimed that the Steelers may take Carson Wentz into consideration if not Rodgers.
DeArdo placed Wentz at number two on a list of the best quarterbacks the Steelers might target in the event that Rodgers decides not to visit Pittsburgh.
“After suffering a knee injury late in the 2017 regular season, Wentz’s career took a significant turn,” DeArdo said. Wentz was a previous Pro Bowler with the Eagles. “Wentz has managed to carve out a relatively successful nine-year career that included a trip to the Super Bowl last year as Patrick Mahomes’ backup in Kansas City, even though his career hasn’t likely gone as he had hoped in the years following his injury.”
Wentz was still nominated for NFL MVP in spite of his December 2017 knee injury. That’s because Wentz averaged 7.5 yards per pass and a career-high 12.4 yards per completion average in 13 games in 2017, leading the Eagles to an 11-2 record with 33 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.
After running back Todd Gurley and quarterback Tom Brady, who took home the MVP honor, Wentz came in third place in the 2017 MVP poll.
Why Carson Wentz, a quarterback, may be the Steelers’ choice to replace Aaron Rodgers
Wentz’s injury to his knee occurred during his breakout second season. However, Wentz has never again been a contender for MVP, whether because of the knee injury or not.
The lone season the quarterback was nominated for a Pro Bowl is still the 2017 campaign.
DeArdo countered that Wentz, who is currently in his early thirties, has developed into a dependable backup. The Steelers could find that alluring in 2025.
DeArdo stated, “Wentz, now 32, seems to have adapted to the next stage of his career as a dependable backup, even though his days as a starter may be over.” “Wentz should be a desirable option for Pittsburgh if Rodgers doesn’t sign because of his experience (he has made 95 career starts), strong career stats (he has 153 touchdowns against just 67 picks), and professionalism.”
DeArdo did not specify if he would support Wentz starting in Pittsburgh over Mason Rudolph. However, Wentz would be the most seasoned veteran of the group when he entered the current Steelers quarterback room.
Wentz has averaged 6.7 yards per pass while throwing 153 touchdowns and 67 interceptions in 98 NFL games. Wentz’s record as a starter is 47-46-1.
Is Wentz a Better Option for the Steelers Than Kirk Cousins?
DeArdo’s hypothetical proposal raises the obvious issue of whether the Steelers would choose Wentz over Kirk Cousins, the signal-caller for the Atlanta Falcons.
