Breaking News: The New York Jets sign a Mega Deal to Land a Rival’s $100 Million Free Agent.
For their new quarterback, Justin Fields, the New York Jets sorely need to acquire additional weapons.
Kurt Benkert, an analyst and former NFL quarterback, suggested the Jets as a top destination for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Amari Cooper.
According to Bleacher Report, Benkert stated, “I see the Jets as a potential landing spot for Amari Cooper.” “The New York Jets are on this list because their No. 1 wide receiver, Garrett Wilson, did not perform well when he was the only true vertical receiver in their offense, Davante Adams is no longer with them, and Allen Lazard is their No. 2 receiver.”
Cooper recently completed the last year of the $100 million deal he first inked with the Dallas Cowboys. He has played for the Cleveland Browns, the Cowboys, and most recently the Bills for the past five years.
For Wilson to succeed, the Jets need a running mate.
Garrett Wilson was having some trouble before Davante Adams arrived since he wasn’t stealing the show and was receiving all of the attention from CB1s, the best cornerbacks on the other team. When Adams joined the team, Garrett Wilson’s performance improved. It began removing his covering and eyes,” Benkert remarked.
The figures support Benkert’s explanation.
Wilson had 67 targets, 41 catches, 399 receiving yards, three touchdowns, and an average of 10.05 yards per grab in the season’s first six games.
Four of the six games saw Wilson end with fewer than 61 receiving yards.
The figures seem significantly different in the last 11 games of the season following Adams’ acquisition by the Jets. Wilson averaged 11.99 yards per reception, caught 60 passes, had 705 receiving yards, four touchdowns, and was targeted 87 times.
“I believe Cooper can help a guy like Garrett Wilson, who, let’s face it, doesn’t have a lot of offensive firepower for the Jets.” “I think they are going to have a hard time when teams just go and double Garrett Wilson if they only have Wilson as their true, like explosive receiver of any sort,” Benkert said. “I really believe that the Jets must bring someone who can if they hope to have any chance in their division this year. At least for this year, someone like Amari Cooper can go support them, give them a little more worth, and kind of start them moving.
Cooper would enter the room with a few credentials.
In the weeks leading up to the 2025 NFL draft, the former Alabama product is still a free agent. Cooper, 30, has been a successful wide receiver for a long time and has been selected to five Pro Bowls.
In the first round of the 2015 NFL draft, he was selected with the fourth overall pick. Cooper has made 143 starts and played in 154 games. Cooper has scored 64 touchdowns and pulled in 711 catches for 10,033 receiving yards throughout that time.
According to Pro Football Focus’s first projection, he would sign a two-year contract for $30 million, of which $25 million would be guaranteed. According to Over The Cap, Cooper would rank No. 22 among the highest-paid football receivers with that $15 million yearly pay.
But the market for experienced receivers hasn’t grown as much as many had anticipated. To put it another way, given the major changes brought about by free agency, Cooper may be available for even less.
Cooper has the credentials to be the Jets’ No. 2 receiver in 2025, a position they need filled.
