The Yankees have unearthed a real gem in Matt Carpenter - Pinstripe Alley

Matt Carpenter announced his retirement from Major League Baseball after 14 years of service.

The Cardinals, who wished Carpenter well in an X post, were the team that the 39-year-old slugger played for during 12 of those seasons in St. Louis.

“Matt, congrats on an amazing career! You represented our city with style, whether on the pitch or in the community,” the squad stated.

Carpenter made his debut two years after the Cardinals selected him in the 2009 draft. He led the team with 155 home runs and slashed 262/.368/.449 throughout his 11 years in St. Louis. His 122 OPS+ puts him fourth among hitters with at least 1,000 plate appearances in the club between 2011 and 2021.

Then, Carpenter moved to New York and hit .305 with a 1.138 OPS for the Yankees in 2022 and was able to leverage his performance in the Bronx into a two-year, $6 million deal with the Padres. In December, San Diego dealt him to the Braves, and three days later, Atlanta let him go.

He signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals in January of last year, going back to his MLB origins.
