CBS Sports: Before OTAs, the Detroit Lions added an experienced linebacker.
Zach Cunningham, a veteran linebacker, is allegedly joining the Detroit Lions.
The Detroit Lions have acquired another seasoned player to their linebacker room ahead of the start of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) at the end of the week. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Zach Cunningham will be joining the Lions.
Cunningham, a 2017 second-round selection, has played for the Tennessee Titans (2021–22), Philadelphia Eagles (2023), Houston Texans (2017–21), and most recently, the Denver Broncos (2024).
Cunningham has appeared in 102 games over his career, including 86 starts. Two years ago, he was mostly a starter for the Eagles, recording 85 tackles, four passes defended, and recovering a fumble in Philadelphia. He did, however, play a large portion of the season on the Broncos’ practice squad last year before joining the team’s active roster for the last two months. He only played 15 defensive snaps and 41 special teams snaps in the season’s last seven games.
Alex Anzalone, Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, Grant Stuart, Anthony Pittman, Ezekiel Turner, and Trevor Nowaske are just a few of the players that will be in the packed linebacker room in Detroit. But during their offseason training, the Lions could require a few more people. Anzalone may skip OTAs, as he has done on a regular basis in the past, while Rodriguez is still recovering from his ruptured ACL sustained last year.
With a series of workouts that go all weekend, the Lions kick off OTAs on Friday. June 3–5 is when their second and last round of OTAs will take place. After being selected for the preseason Hall of Fame game, Detroit postponed mandatory minicamp earlier this spring.
