David Hamilton settles into regular role with Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have developed an unexpected trade pattern. The Yankees did not benefit from Boston’s trade of outfielder Alex Verdugo to New York before to the previous season. Another move backfired for New York during this season, when Carlos Narváez, a veteran of the minor leagues, emerged as the Red Sox’s starter. The Yankees are reportedly interested in a new Red Sox player, and a surprising one at that.

David Hamilton Appears To Be Odd-Man Out At Second Base

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports that the Yankees are considering David Hamilton, who has spent the majority of this season as Boston’s backup second baseman, as a possible speedster off the bench. “An outside executive (said) the Yankees like Red Sox backup infielder David Hamilton,” wrote Sherman.

This season, 27-year-old Hamilton is hitting.174 and has a.505 OPS. When Alex Bregman came back from the disabled list earlier this month, he was relegated to Triple-A. A Yankees fan could be blown away by their team’s interest in such a guy based on those factors. Hamilton’s speed is phenomenal, though, and he can pick it at second base (six defensive runs saved). In his short major league career, he has stolen 50 bases and only been caught stealing eight times.

Fantasy baseball: David Hamilton could boost your speed on the bases

The Yankees wouldn’t bring in Hamilton with the expectation that he would lead the offense. However, because the Yankees don’t presently have that kind of speed-first utility player, the prospect of using him off the bench in a pinch-running situation during the playoffs must be alluring. But in the midst of a postseason run, would the Red Sox really allow a major leaguer to go for their main rivals? We’ll know for sure by Thursday.
