Free-agent safety Jamal Adams: 'I would love to be back with the Jets'

The previous top-10 pick may be traded once more.

This summer, the Detroit Lions lost both of their coordinators when Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson accepted head coaching positions with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears, respectively.

Despite his brief tenure in the Motor City, a former top draft selection made no secret of his want to resume his career under the guidance of one of his former coordinators. Former Lions safety and free agent Jamal Adams recently pleaded with the team that selected him sixth overall in 2019 to reconnect with Glenn in an appearance with the “The Jets Lounge” podcast.

Adams stated, “I obviously want to finish it the right way, and I would love to be back with the Jets.” To mend that connection and somehow make it work would be a dream come true, man. Simply enter as an experienced veterinarian, provide prey for the young cats, and offer assistance in any manner I can. I’m confident that I can still play football.

“I can have a lot of effects on the game and I’m in good condition. All I need is a fair chance to enter and demonstrate my abilities.

Adams was on the Tennessee Titans roster at the start of the 2024 regular season, but after seeing just 20 total snaps in three games, he was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list and asked to be released. After joining the Lions a little more than a month later, he was cut on New Year’s Day after just recording three tackles in two games.

The former standout for the LSU Tigers insists that he is now fit and prepared to perform at the caliber that supporters have come to expect from him during his career. All of that is great and well, but Adams is at a disadvantage due to his advanced age, since he will be approaching thirty this season.

There’s no assurance that Adams’ request won’t be ignored by the Jets. He could have a chance in New York if he can persuade Glenn and the front office that his inclusion on the roster will help the defense.

However, Lions supporters may be assured that Adams has little chance of joining the Jets, with or without Glenn’s support, if he looks like he did in his two appearances for Detroit.
