The N.F.L. Is Still Failing to Hold Deshaun Watson Accountable | The New Yorker

Although Deshaun Watson’s future with the Cleveland Browns is still up in the air, his plans are starting to take shape off the field.

Watson has been occupied while recovering from an Achilles injury. He just asked Jilly Anais, his longtime girlfriend, to marry him. In March, she announced their engagement by sharing photos of herself and Watson.

Anais posted pictures of himself with the Browns quarterback and tagged him in them on Tuesday, making another statement.

The pair posed in a yellow Ferrari with the phrase, “The Watsons… coming soon.”

Deshaun Watson was publicly moved on by the Browns.
In 2022, the Browns executed a historic move by signing the former Pro Bowl player to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract and giving a huge load of draft selections to the Houston Texans. However, since then, Watson’s tenure in Cleveland has been tainted by injuries, off-field controversy, and patchy play.

Browns Give Key Update on Deshaun Watson's Status

Even though he is still the team’s highest paid player, his future is very uncertain. Watson is recuperating from an Achilles rupture, which he first sustained in October and which worsened during rehabilitation, necessitating a second operation in January. It is anticipated that he will miss the most, if not all, of the forthcoming season.

In his place, the Browns have proceeded with a packed quarterback room that includes youngsters Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel in addition to veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. Watson is unlikely to regain a starting position in Cleveland, even if he fully recovers. For the first time this offseason, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam called the Watson deal a failure.

During the league’s annual meeting, Haslam reportedly stated, “We had a big swing-and-miss with Deshaun.” “We believed we had the quarterback, but we were mistaken. We need to get out of that bind since we sacrificed several draft selections to get him.

“Hold us accountable because [the trade] was a decision made by the entire organization and it ends with Dee [Haslam] and me.”

The Browns are searching for a quarterbacking option now that Watson is out of the running. In the draft, Cleveland made two attempts at quarterbacks, choosing Sanders in the fifth round and Gabriel in the third.

The Browns have no plans to add two rookie quarterbacks. However, the organization believed that Sanders, who was most likely to be selected in the first round, was too valuable to pass up at selection No. 144.

“We felt that choosing two quarterbacks wasn’t necessarily the plan going into the weekend,” Browns general manager Berry said to reporters following the selection. We did not necessarily anticipate that he would be available in the fifth round, but as we discussed, we do believe in positional value and the best player available. Every position room benefits from competition, and we enjoy bringing him in to compete with the other men. We believed that was the proper course of action.

The Cleveland quarterback battle officially began when Gabriel, Sanders, and the other rookies from the Browns joined the veterans.
