In 2021, Dan Campbell took over as head coach of the Detroit Lions. He had 26 years of NFL experience, including 11 as a player and 15 as a coach.

After a tough first season, Campbell has guided the Lions to two historic seasons, including the 2023 season, when they made their first appearance in the NFC championship game in 30 years.

Although Campbell isn’t the most outspoken person, he has made it apparent throughout the years how much he loves a certain metal band.

Detroit Lions head coach Probably Dan Campbell’s Favorite Band
Over the years, Campbell has famously raved over Metallica. In a speech he gave to the players in the first episode of the 2022 season of HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” Campbell used Metallica’s “No Leaf Clover” lyrics. This is not the only instance of Campbell using Metallica during team speeches.

After that, Campbell recorded a greeting message for Metallica’s social media accounts, saying, “Detroit is ready for you,” when the band revealed they would be playing two performances in Detroit at Ford Field in 2023 as part of their “72 Seasons” World Tour.

James Hetfield of Metallica even responded to Dan Campbell with a video, expressing his excitement about playing at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions.

In the video greeting, Hetfield remarked, “Hey everyone, this is James from Metallica. I want to thank Coach Campbell for all of his amazing references to Metallica songs.” “The end of the tunnel is especially encouraging.” We will speak with Roger Goodell on your behalf and try to get you a bye week so you may attend our event. Metallica is honored to be playing at his home, the Ford Field. “Go Lions,” Hetfield said as he concluded it.

Due to his travels with the Lions, Campbell was unable to attend the Metallica performances in Detroit. However, his spirit was present. “They’ve stood the test of time,” he stated of the band at a news conference prior to the November 2023 performance.

Therefore, even if we can’t say for sure, Metallica must be among Campbell’s all-time favorite bands.

Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions In contrast with other NFL coaches
Campbell was still listed as the seventh-best head coach by NBC Sports’ Patrick Daugherty going into the 2025 campaign.

From three wins to nine to twelve to fifteen, Dan Campbell’s Lions have progressed. Their first significant setback occurred near the summit, according to Daugherty. “The Commanders upset the helpless Lions squad, the No. 1 seed in the NFC, at home in the Divisional Round. At a time when many were predicting a Super Bowl climax for one of the NFL’s most exciting new initiatives, it was a terrible loss.

“Everyone from the fans, to the front office, has developed a taste for winning they never thought possible,” he continues as the season approaches. It is now up to the NFL’s supreme tone setter to find out how to turn 2025 into a season of redemption rather than a decline. Test after test, Campbell has aced it. His most difficult one to date will be this one.
