ESPN: Following Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s return, Yankees acquire a rival star in a blockbuster deal.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a home run against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday after returning off the disabled list, giving the New York Yankees a boost in their infield. Despite starting the season at his natural position of second base, Chisholm was moved to third base to make room for teammate DJ LeMahieu, who had just recovered from an injury of his own. The Yankees urged Chisholm to go to third base to get ready when he started his rehab stay in the minor leagues, and he responded forcefully. He stated, “I just want to win,” according to SNY. “I want a ring.”

Chisholm’s versatility not only lets LeMahieu remain at second base but also gives the Yankees the option to trade for reinforcements at second or third base. And it could be the secret to acquiring Tampa Bay Rays star second baseman Brandon Lowe from the division rivals. “Lowe could come in and make an impact at second base, which would allow Chisholm to move back over to third base, which is where he played after the Yankees traded for him and made a run to the World Series last year,” Bailey Bassett wrote in ClutchPoints. “The Tampa Bay Rays’ star has regressed since his 2019 All-Star appearance and 2021 39-home run season, but he would still be an upgrade to New York’s lineup.”

Given that the Rays are about to make another deadline as sellers, Lowe appears to be among the top infield alternatives on the trade block. Additionally, he would be a huge improvement over LeMahieu even if his offense declines from his best seasons. Most significantly, adding him would not require the Yankees to forfeit a lot of prospect value. In return for Lowe, Bassett suggested that the Yankees give the Rays their No. 7 prospect Chase Hampton and their No. 10 prospect Cam Schlittler. It may be the type of move the Yankees explore in a few weeks, since Chilsholm and the rest of the squad are determined to win a ring this year.
