Panthers release Jadeveon Clowney after one season

Earlier past summer, the Philadelphia Eagles lost one of their top edge rushers to free agency.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Pro Bowl edge rusher Josh Sweat parted ways when he joined with the Arizona Cardinals. As a result, the team might be on the hunt for someone to replace him.

Luckily for them, a reliable veteran just became available for the role.

Jadeveon Clowney, a former Pro Bowl edge rusher, was cut by the Carolina Panthers on Thursday. He is 32 years old, although he has had some excellent football in recent seasons.

He had 9.5 sacks in 15 games that he started with the Baltimore Ravens just two seasons prior. Despite missing three games in 2024, he managed to record 5.5 sacks and 46 total tackles.

Even though he is getting older, the Eagles need a seasoned presence. Since the majority of their players are 25 years of age or younger, the squad may benefit from having an experienced man like Clowney mentor the younger players.

The Eagles may be seeking to strengthen that area of their defense in order to return to the Super Bowl, since they finished in the middle of the pack in 2024 when it came to sacks.

Adding a seasoned edge rusher like Clowney to get to the opposing quarterback might make the defending Super Bowl winners’ defense even more formidable, given they gave up the fewest yards per game during the previous season.

Even though Clowney is clearly past his best, a club trying to compete may still benefit from having him.
