Ezekiel Elliott Is Not Worth The Money He Wants | FiveThirtyEight

The Dallas Cowboys’ decision to release running back Ezekiel Elliott prior to the team’s season finale was discussed by Jerry Jones on Tuesday.

According to reports, Elliott asked the Cowboys for his release so he could sign with a club that would be in the playoffs once he cleared waivers. Elliott’s desires were fulfilled on Tuesday by the Cowboys.

Jones wrote a statement on the Cowboys’ club website confirming the claims.

“We are releasing Zeke from the Cowboys roster today out of respect and appreciation for him and wanting to give him an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible,” Jones’ statement said.

As I’ve stated several times before, Zeke’s legacy as one of the best players to ever wear the Star on their helmet will endure forever and be inscribed in our history books. We appreciate him, adore him, and send him our best wishes.

This summer, Elliott rejoined the Cowboys on a one-year contract after playing for the New England Patriots in 2023.

Rico Dowdle was the starting quarterback, and Elliott was his backup. Elliott did had the most running touchdowns on the squad. However, considering that the Cowboys finished the NFL with a pitiful five total running touchdowns through Week 17, that doesn’t say much.

Elliott had a career low by rushing for 226 yards and three touchdowns on 74 touches in 15 games this season.
