ESPN: The Red Sox sign $11.5 million talented reliever as a replacement for Carlos Estévez.
As the 2025 season approaches, the Boston Red Sox are in dire need of a closer. However, they made a mistake with both of the top relievers.
Tanner Scott first signed a big contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which Boston witnessed. According to reports, Carlos Estévez has now signed to a contract with the Kansas City Royals.
Zachary Rotman of FanSided recently forecast that the Red Sox will target David Robertson, a free agent from the Texas Rangers. After earning $11.5 million in a season, Robertson is expected to sign a contract for $7 million this winter, according to Spotrac.
“The best option available for Boston with Estevez off the board is a reliever fans are awfully familiar with, David Robertson, who spent parts of nine seasons with the New York Yankees,” Rotman stated. “Despite being 39 years old, Robertson is still a very successful reliever.
“In 68 games and 72 innings pitched during the previous season, the right-hander recorded a 3.00 ERA with the Texas Rangers. He struck out 99 hitters altogether, his greatest season-long strikeout percentage since 2017. Robertson has been dependable despite his senior age, appearing in at least 58 games with ERAs that are either slightly over or slightly below 3.00.
The former New York Yankees star might be the high-leverage reliever Boston needs, and while the Red Sox might not be able to use him as the team’s closer, it would be a good addition. Boston may need to look at the trade market in order to acquire a true closer by 2025.
