ESPN: The Yankees’ historic two-for-one trade scenario brings an All-Star worth $70 million to infield.
As of Monday, the New York Yankees led the Tampa Bay Rays by 2 1/2 games in the American League East. Their infield, too, needs some improvements. DJ LeMahieu has seen the most of the action at second base, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. has taken over at third base following Oswaldo Cabrera’s injury. Chisholm is a stronger defender at second base than in the hot corner, LeMahieu’s fielding is subpar, and his bat leaves a lot to be desired.
LeMahieu’s OPS is.684 despite his hitting.255 through 32 games. Cole Shelton of Heavy suggested the following deal, which would have sent Ryan McMahon, an All-Star third baseman, from the Colorado Rockies to the Yankees: Ryan McMahon is acquired by the Yankees. Henry Lalane (Yankees No. 9) and Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz (Yankees No. 6) are acquired by the Rockies. In 2022, McMahon agreed to a six-year contract for $70 million with the Rockies. He had hit 20 or more home runs in every complete season since 2019 going into this one. He is only hitting.222 this season, but he has 12 home runs and an OPS of.737.
He may significantly improve the Yankees’ offense after being named an All-Star for the first time in his career last season. His batting average may also benefit from playing for a competitive squad. LeMahieu would be placed on the bench and Chisholm would play second base as McMahon would fill in at third base.
By adding one player, such transactions would improve the Yankees’ offense, defense, and bench. The Yankees wouldn’t have to worry about finding a replacement third baseman in the summer because he is under club control through 2027. However, McMahon’s club control makes him a desirable trade piece if they believe the team’s best prospect, infielder George Lombard Jr., is prepared to play in the major leagues the following season.
