When fan interference was called, the Yankees won this time.

If you’ve heard this before, stop me.

At Yankee Stadium, an outfielder was unable to secure the out as a New York Yankees fan obstructed him in foul area near the right-field wall. Such an event, featuring Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, notoriously occurred during Game 4 of the Dodgers’ World Series win against the Yankees in October of 2024.

Well, on Tuesday evening, it occurred once more.

Aaron Judge makes this young fan's day

Aaron Judge, the two-time American League MVP, was being obstructed by a Yankees supporter this time. In the top of the sixth inning, with two outs and the count 1 and 1, the Yankees were ahead 1-0 when Cleveland Guardians center fielder Angel Martinez lofted a changeup from Yankees starter Carlos Rodon to right field. Judge was shoved by a fan as he jumped into the seats to try to capture the foul pop after tracking the ball to foul zone in right. The ball was then bobbled by the Yankees skipper.

The umpires replayed the play after New York promptly contested the call. The Yankees were given the last out of the inning when the crew subsequently determined that there had been fan interference. Judging by the circumstances, Judge did the best he could in handling the matter. He jogged back to his spot in right field after picking up the ball and tossing it to the fans with no emotion.

Yankees fans banned from World Series after Mookie Betts interference

It’s difficult to see the play without remembering the infamous Betts scene. Two spectators got in the way of Betts’ effort to make a play on a foul ball by Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres in the bottom of the first inning of the Yankees’ eventual 11-4 victory against the Dodgers in Game 4 of the World Series. While the other gripped Betts’ glove and extracted the ball, the first one grasped his right hand. In the end, fan meddling resulted to Torres being called out.

After being evicted, the fans were later permanently barred from all MLB stadiums, offices, and facilities.
