Tragic news: A tragic accident claims the life of Steffi Graff’s son on his way to Los Angeles.
According to the LA Times, senior tennis standout Braun Levi died early Sunday morning in a suspected DUI collision in Manhattan Beach, leaving the Loyola High School community in grief. The 18-year-old was only a few weeks away from graduating after winning the Mission League doubles championship.
Police in Manhattan Beach said the accident happened just after midnight. In relation to the incident, a 33-year-old woman from Los Angeles was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. At the scene, Levi was declared deceased.
Recently, Levi joyfully posed with his partner Cooper Schwartz after winning the league doubles title for the fourth time in a row. After a difficult year for his family, who had moved to the South Bay after losing their Pacific Palisades home in a January inferno, his on-court accomplishments were particularly significant.
Levi was “a shining presence in our Loyola family,” according to Loyola High School Principal Jamal Adams, who also said that he provided “light, joy, and inspiration to everyone he touched.” To commemorate his memory, the school organized a prayer vigil on Sunday night.
Brian Held, coach of the Loyola varsity tennis team, termed Levi “probably the most decorated player to ever play for the school.” Levi served as a three-year captain and was greatly appreciated for his leadership and devotion.
This is the second time in recent memory that a student-athlete has died at Loyola High. During spring break in April 2023, baseball player Ryan Times was hit and killed by a train.
In addition, retired American WTA legend Pam Shriver shared her feelings on social media to lament the passing of the gifted child.
The Loyola community recalls Braun Levi for his friendliness and tenacity in addition to his athletic ability as the inquiry goes on.
